Case Study: The implementation of “Safety Differently/Safety II”
Josh Bryant is currently the General Manager – People and Risk for Mitchell Services, one of Australia’s fastest–growing diversified drilling companies (ASX listed: MSV), Mitchell Services.
Josh has lead the implementation of a ‘Safety Differently/Safety II/Human and Organisational Performance’ within Mitchell Services. Safety Differently advocates the view that people are a solution to harness and not a problem to control, that safety is an ethical responsibility and not bureaucracy and that safety is the presence of positives and capacity, not just the absence of injuries and incidents. Harnessing this view has resulted in a change in the culture within Mitchell’s, which combined with simplified systems and improvements, has resulted in improvements in the overall conditions of work for their people.
The implementation of ‘Safety Differently’ has improved overall employee wellbeing which has been recognised by organisations such as Beyond Blue. As a business, Mitchell Services have been a finalist for a number of state and national safety improvement awards, and the business won the ‘Contract Miner of the Year’ at the 2019 Australian Prospect Mining Awards.
Josh was awarded the 2018 Australian Mining Prospect Award for ‘Safety Advocacy’, and in 2020 has been recognised with the AusIMM Jim Torlach Award for Professional Excellence.
