Making mining safer: The future and benefits of autonomous systems
Chirag Sathe is a Chemical Engineer with a PhD and MBA. Apart from conducting a research in use of coal in power generation with reduced greenhouse gases, Chirag has worked in various industries including nuclear, steel, mineral processing and iron ore mining. He was part of the first autonomous truck operations project at BHP in 2012-13 and since then is involved in developing new automation technology for mobile mining equipment providing lead in managing system safety and developing safety case. He was a co-lead for the development of functional safety guidelines as well as implementation of autonomous systems in mining through GMG. He is a participating member of ISO sub-committee for Mine Automation. Chirag strongly believes in developing an autonomous ecosystem, which will help eliminate fatalities, improve productivity and help reduce carbon footprint of mining. Chirag has a deep techno-functional understanding of a range of automation technologies and how they integrate to deliver improved performance.
